Sr. network Engineer

Salary:    80 to $90,000      Location:  Philadelphia, Pa. suburbs

Manager’s note

The job description, specifically, under qualifications and experience, truly outlines the knowledge base we’re looking for. It seems many of those responding are network engineers with general knowledge trying to make a leap into a senior position, ignoring the senior level requirements we’re looking for.

With that said, the emphases should be on a strong working knowledge of large Local & Wide Area Network (LAN/WAN) and wireless network (WLAN) design, hands on ability to configure, install, and troubleshoot Nortel routers and switches, knowledgeable on Nortel Meridian PBX and/or Succession Call Server Technology, including Voice over IP (VoIP) to the desktop, and preferably knowledgeable on network and internet security applications and tools (Ex: Check Point Firewall, BlueCoat ProxySG, Websense).

While Nortel is the voice/data manufacturer of choice for the company, from a data perspective most engineers will be certified on Cisco equipment. That’s still OK, a strong engineer should be able to adapt easily to another vendors products, as all manufacturers follow the same basic standards.
